Tool · ECB reference rates, 4 Jan 2016 – 16 Oct 2026

What was an amount worth in another currency on a past date?

Pick two currencies and a date: the converter applies the ECB euro reference rates published that day, or the previous fixing if the ECB did not publish (weekends and TARGET holidays). For example, 1,000 USD was 858.44 EUR on 16 Oct 2025 and 888.65 EUR on 16 Oct 2026.

Up to 1 trillion; commas allowed.

4 Jan 2016 to 16 Oct 2026.

Example (calculated when this page was built):

858.44 EUR

1,000 USD on 16 Oct 2025 at 1 USD = 0.85844 EUR. At the latest fixing (16 Oct 2026, 1 USD = 0.88865 EUR) the same dollars were worth 888.65 EUR.

Data: ECB euro foreign exchange reference rates, snapshot retrieved 16 Oct 2026. Conversions between two non-euro currencies use the cross of their euro rates. The ECB publishes these rates for information only; they are not the rates a bank or card provider will apply.

How does the converter pick the rate?

  1. It looks up the ECB fixing for the date you choose. If there is none (weekend or a TARGET holiday such as 25 December), it uses the most recent earlier fixing and says so.
  2. Each currency is published as units per one euro. Converting A to B multiplies the amount by (B per euro) ÷ (A per euro). See how to calculate a cross rate.
  3. Results are rounded to two decimals; the displayed rate is also rounded, while calculations use the saved rate precision. For records, accounts and tax, check which official rate your authority requires — read which exchange rate to use for past transactions.
